Employer reduced salary/bonus after disclosing illness

  • Ok thank you for your responses.

I am already looking around and ways this will be covered off this month.

Anyway in terms of bonus no actual terms set on how to qualify.

However if you actually look at performance. What I do has actually grown the business. Targets each month are not set targets either.

This discretionary bonus as been the same amount for 3 years. On this basis I feel it should be part of my contractual salary.

Nothing ambiguous about the word discretionary.  What you feel has no bearing. It's your employers money.

In other words,  they can pay it or not. End of.  So it doesn't matter what you think should happen,  it's discretionary and they decide. Maybe not great to have no clear rules,  I agree.  But that's up to them.

It's discretionary so that's end of it

I do feel bad for you because obviously it's a bit of a letdown but they can do it and always could've.
  • Do you have the heart to take them on over their decision?
  • Do I want to take it further? If I had the energy for it I would happily go for it and try. Thank you for your thoughts.

The trust I had in my employer has now gone their actions and if it is true decision was made before I had this conversation with them leaves me to think they were going to wait until payday next week when I notice it and then talk to me about it when I asked the question.

I feel really let down I spent 6 months working from home (like many of us) increase in utility bills kept my performance up for them and didn't complain one bit. Was grateful I was still working and had a little benefit that I had little commute to work.

So naturally I am now looking around to see what is out there.

I understand and agree. It seems very convienient. However on your quoted comment. For me even if I had the heating on full all the time I would have been at work it is still cheaper for me to work from home. If they were next door I sympathise but not many people get that. (20-30 min drive for me, maybe 15 miles at most but depends on when I need to get in, maybe 15 mins at best!).

Weigh up your choices. They no longer care. And you really had no good reason to tell them.
