Marriage allowance amount less than expected

in Cutting tax
Hi all.
I noticed at the time but didn't worry about it but now I'd rather like to know why...
My husband applied to transfer his marriage allowance to me for previous years (never the current year), and then I'd receive a payment from HMRC.
I wondered if anyone could tell me why, for the 2018-2019 tax year the amount I received was £220.20, and for the 2019-2020 tax year the amount was £202.00
I would have expected £238.00 for the first year and £250.00 for the second year.
I'm kinda glad to just get anything back from HMRC, but I would rather like to know why the amount I received was less than expected.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Presumably you owed £48 for 2019:20.
Applying for or receiving Marriage Allowance means your tax position is reviewed to ensure you get the correct amount back or correct bill i.e. where the applicant now needs to pay tax.
Most people owe a little on PAYE which HMRC tend to ignore. Unless your record needs reviewing for some other reason i.e. receipt of Marriage Allowance.
Didn't you get a calculation?0 -
Thanks for your reply.I can’t remember getting a calculation, but it was a good while ago now.I hadn’t thought ‘What if I owed them?’ That kinda makes sense as tax things adjust one or two times a year for me. I will look out for a calculation after my husband applies for 2020-2021 tax year.
Many thanks!0
