After death the freedom of information law replaces the data protection law as it's impossible for a deceased person to be requesting their own records personally or by proxy. A personal representative (estate executor or administrator) may still be able to get some information on request, just not by using a SAR.
DWP has its flaws but they aren't likely to include fulfilling a SAR for a person they know to be deceased and hence unable to make one.Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!0 -

Pension firms themselves normally get reports of deaths via official channels and that will normally trigger followup enquiries.0 -
The government provides these listings for those with a legal reason to use the data re deaths of people in the UK.
There are a number of companies that buy this data from the government.
They then in turn receive the details of people in company pension schemes from employers who are interested. These companies compare the data and then inform the pension schemes who pay for their services of possible company pensioners on the deceased listing.
The company I worked for in 2008 was using one of the companies that provided such a service then.
One name did appear as deceased where my employer was still paying the deceased persons pension.
The company contacted the deceased persons bank and the bank had a good idea who was withdrawing monies from the deceased persons bank account. It appeared the withdrawer of the monies found that the game was up and stopped withdrawing monies from the deceased persons bank account.
As nothing could be proved, the bank could not give out any details. The company stopped paying the deceased persons pension and the received no complaints from the deceased. At that time there was no such service in place from overseas for company pensioners who had moved abroad and had company pensions in payment.
