Do I ask my employer or HRMC to avoid paying BR tax next month? Started a new job and first pay cheque, paid heavy tax on BR code. Couldn’t really afford another month BR tax code!

My understanding is that HMRC will automatically update your employer with your code. If that is done after your employer's payroll cut off date then you'll continue to pay the higher tax. Nothing you can tell your employer will change that.
But you could ask your employer if they have received the code from HMRC just to manage your own expectations and finances.
