Water filtering at home

A bit random for this forum but maybe someone here can help!
I have used a water filter/cooler for several years as I hate the taste of tap water, especially when it tastes of chlorine!
However, we have now bought a fridge/freezer which has a water dispenser with a 4.5 litre tank. This is filled from tap water so I’m wondering if there are any tablets I could use in the tank to purify the water, ie make it tasteless.
Thanks.

Hi. sorry this will sound silly but are you sure your fridge does not have a built in filter some do?
If not and you have access you could perhaps fit one of the below (not a recommendation just to show the type of thing)
There's possibly a blue or white pipe c.6mm diameter going to your fridge and you can but in-line filters that this pipe will fit.

I used to install office water coolers for a friend but I can't remember the make of filter that was used but they were a bit smaller than the one below.

  • No, I’m pretty sure it doesn’t have a built in filter.

    Ok.

These were the type I meant to point you towards. Assumes the water pipe is accessible - usually connects under the sink depending on kitchen layout.

  • Thanks but I don’t think this would work on our Samsung f/f. The tank is only for manual filling. I really need something I could drop into the tank.

Ah sorry I'd forgot those type of fridges existed. I don't know about tablets but I'll leave you with this in case it's something you might be interested in.

Yes it sounds like an installed under-sink tap filter like NSG666 suggests or a good old Brita-type jug filter is going to be needed.  There's no tablet that would achieve what you want as far as i know.

If you are in a hard water area, the sink/jug filter would need to be one that reduces minerals as well as include carbon granules to remove tastes and odours (Brita filters do reduce mineral content).  If the mains water is soft, then you'd just want either carbon/charcoal granules, or carbon block types to take the chlorine and organics away.

The only other thing would be a full 'RO' system which give very pure water, but also waste a lot of water in the process.  Or using supermarket bottled water.

What about buying a large water filter tank of this sort of type https://smile.amazon.co.uk/Epic-Countertop-Dispenser-Drinking-Bacteria/dp/B08P3TJ5W7/ref=sr_1_15?dchild=1&keywords=large+water+filter+tank&qid=1631935492&sr=8-15.  Then transfer the water via a jug.

Or installing a water filter system to the cold water tap and doing the same.
  • It won't let me post a link but the easiest option for you I think would be to search for "Finerfilters" on Google and have a look at plumbing in one of their under sink kits and using that filter tap to fill your fridge tank :)
