Sick pay

Hi. I took sick last Thursday and ended up in hospital. On Saturday i had my appendix out. I have been told at the moment to take 3 weeks off work. I don't work Monday’s i only work tues-Fri so to work out my wages for the month do i just divide statutory sick pay by 7 days to work out how much you get each day then multiple by 4 days as this is what i work each week.
Thks

  • Statutory sick pay is just a set amount, you dont get less for working part time. You wont get paid for the first three days you were absent though.
  • Thanks so even though u self cert yourself for 5 days its just 3 days u don't get pay and i will get paid the full weekly amount of £96.35 per week im off? Sorry this is all new to me
  • Oh sorry so what if your first 3 days are 2 on 1 week and 1 on the next week? The week that has 1 day which would be no pay do i still get the £96.35 for that week? Apologises
  • Your complicating the situation. Providing you meet the eligibility criteria, you qualify. The payment isn't broken down beyond that.
  • Apologises oh-really but I'm never off work and i have commitments and I'm just trying to work out what i will get paid at the end of the month

You say you "....took sick last Thursday...." so the first question is did you do any work on that day.  If you did go to work and after starting work you were unable to continue then Thursday does not count for SSP purposes and the first day would be Friday.  If however you did not do any work on Thursday then Thursday is the first day.
You work Tuesday to Friday so these would be your Qualifying days and Saturday Sunday and Monday would be non-qualifying days.  (this can occasionally vary but I see nothing in your post to suggest this is the case)
You need four days of sickness before SSP is considered which you obviously have and certain level of earnings which I assume you have.
There is no payment made for the first three qualifying days ( unless this is affected by a recent sickness which your post suggests is not the case) so I will assume three waiting days as they are called.
Depending on whether Thursday can count these days will either be Thursday Friday and Tuesday or Friday Tuesday and Wednesday.
So the first week that any SSP will be due will be the first full week after your sickness started and the days that will be paid will be either Wednesday Thursday and Friday or Thursday and Friday depending on whether the first day of sickness (Thursday) counts for SSP.  For a part week the daily rate is calculated by dividing the SSP weekly rate by the number of qualifying days so if its 2 QDs to be paid its £96.35/4*2   £48.18 and if its 3 its £96.35/4*3   £72.27
After that the full weekly rate applies for each full week and if you return during a week the same calculation would be made for that part week.
  • Chrisbur thank you very very much i really appreciate your help. I didn't work Thursday or Friday last week so my 3rd day as you said is today meaning i will get 72.27 this week and the next 2 weeks the full amount. Once again thank you for your help and clarity, this is so new to me.
