Do you need a top end phone with extra data etc if you primarily use it at home off your wifi?
I don't know what contract you will / can get (if at all at this stage) or if a payg sim at this stage is better.
It might be worth buying a reconditioned phone for the short term or a new (but older model phone) you might need to save up for this but will you really need a new phone. Sadly you will have limited options but if you think clever you can still get a workable alternative.
I can share my experience of obtaining mobile phone finance after bankruptcy. After my discharge, I decided to get Sky Broadband for home (I suppose TV on it's own would work too). After 3-4 months of on time payments, I asked for a SIM only contract by telephone. I was very honest with the advisor about by bankruptcy, however, upon doing the application it was approved.
The advisor said if I paid on time for 6 months, I could apply for mobile phone finance. I called just after the 6 months and applied for finance on a iPhone 12. It was approved based on my existing services with them and my on-time payment history.
I think it's important to do it by telephone if you are considering taking any form of credit in the early stages. Where possible, ask for a 'soft search' if they need to perform a credit check. If it doesn't work with on soft search, maybe look at ways you can improve your credit elsewhere. I used a service called LOQBOX which had an epic result for me.
I know we are all scored differently, but I wanted to let you know what worked for me.
