HGV Training

Good afternoon,

I am researching HGV training for a career switch, and am looking for advice on where/how I can find a good training organisation in the UK (I am midlands but able to travel for training)

I appreciate it isn't appropriate to name companies here, but my research is being compounded by a very high level of sites proposing to be trainers, but their information suggests they're brokers, or my BS detector suggests something less desirable.
I did find an HGV forum, but it seemed to be hosted by a training company, and a number of posts seemed to be more about venting off tbh, so not great.
Also a lot of the information, is 'do this, don't do that' but it is often being contradicted, so not very helpful or trustworthy,

- I am a serious prospect and will likely want to book a course very soon - any thoughts?

I also want to understand more about the government changes coming into effect - whether anyone here has a good understanding, or if you can recommend some credible information sources, that'd be great (there hasn't been much said by operators in the industry so much - more government pages etc)

Appreciate any help.

thanks

  • I don't know anything at all about HGV training, but I just thought I'd mention that I read that a number of employers are now recruiting people to train in HGV. Worth looking into perhaps? At least one that was mentioned was a large supermarket chain - I think it was Morrisons but I won't swear to that because I wasn't really paying much attention to the story!

I know there must always be plenty of comparatively inexperienced HGV drivers on the road, and that the training was pretty extensive.  What concerns me is the probability of a lot more inexperienced HGV drivers coming on the road at the same time, potentially with less extensive testing and less difficult tests being passed.  All because the Government minister in charge says allowing EU drivers in would only be a short term solution.  Yes it would be a short term solution but we have an immediate, short term problem!
