Wigs

I am a woman of a certain age who has very thin hair.  After my disastrous purchase from China (unknowingly at the time), I would like to buy one from the UK. I cannot afford a real hair wig and also I don't want one as you have to treat it as you would your own hair. Therefore, would like a good quality synthetic. Has anyone any advice please.

I would say go for an Ellen Wille or Rene of Paris. I’ve got 2 human hair wigs (I have alopecia) and I couldn’t wear another synthetic, but you’re very right HH wigs are expensive and high maintenance. I have a box full of straighteners/curling implements/hair spray/heat spray/clips, bobbles and scrunchies. I’ve spent just about as much on product as I have the wigs!

Try having a look somewhere like Simply Wigs, Trendco or Lemonade Wigs. They’re all very reputable (I’ve bought from Trendco and Simply Wigs myself- never bought from Lemonade but they have an excellent reputation in the Alopecia community) and won’t rip you off.
How much you pay depends on what you want, really. If you want a top of the range one that looks like your own hair it will be more expensive but I tend to find the cheaper the wig, the more ‘wiggy’ it looks. Jon Renau is another good make. Before I switched to HH I always had Rene of Paris and found them excellent. Have a look for sales or even on EBay. Also wig banks are a great place to look- I got one of my HH wigs for an absolute steal from a wig bank.

These are my favourite synthetic brands, I never wear human hair

Koko, I always go back to these, lots of websites sell them including their own and great value on eBay, I use the grace half wig, these are the best quality at this price point and they last about 6 weeks with virtually everyday use, only negative is the colours are a bit drab but very natural and hardly any shedding

Wiwigs - from their own site or ebay, originally from china - again half wigs, positves - excellent quality, beautiful colours with highlights etc, super fast delivery from UK, again last about six weeks, negatives - more shedding than the koko but not much and their stock levels can vary a lot

Kryssma - half wigs and full wigs, slightly more expensive but a good choice of colours and styles, I'm not mad on full wigs but these are quite good if that's what you want best value I've found is from Amazon, some shedding but manageable

I have also found another brand on eBay called tresair, excellent value and beautiful colours with lots of mixes, these are the ones I get most compliments on my hair when I wear the half wigs, however they do shed more than the others, they are from china and the seller has informed me they are moving away from selling hair, plenty of stock at the moment it seems but its very annoying to find something you like and then its gone.

I hope this gives you a start, I'm happy to help more if I can.

Thank you also. What a lot of options for me now. What is a half wig? Although I do have hair, it is very fine and thin so cannot imagine anything that has to clip onto it, staying in place.
  • It's worn slightly back from the front so you leave out some of your own hair to cover the clips/join, its a good in between option of those who like clip in extensions but not the drag or damage they can cause and they are also great for lazy people like me :D I can see this may be difficult with thinner hair although some people do this with a full wig too for ease of instal and to achieve a more natural look, I use volumising dry shampoo on my own hair to help with grip and appearance, having said that I don't have any hair issues I just prefer the look and ease of a half wig, just as an afterthought I started taking some vitamins to try and help my rubbish nails and have noticed my hair is going wild  :D both thickness and lengthwise, they were Boots hair skin and nails  :)

If you still have some hair, you’ll find a hair topper will be significantly more comfortable than a full wig. They don’t look any different (it’s not like a toupe!) but it doesn’t grip your head as much so less headaches, you won’t need a wig cap underneath and it’s not as warm. Wigs can be like wearing a woolly hat.
