Loan to a friend and tax

Good afternoon people. I've got a question in regards to tax.

My situation is as follows:

I've lent 2000£ to a friend to start a business. I know I will get the money back, that's not the issue here.
The money was lent this way: he bought a van for 1200£, I paid 600£ to the owner through bank transfer, 350 in cash from my bank account and 250£ to my friend's bank account (total 1200£). Yes unnecessarily complicated, I know.
A further 800£ were transferred through bank transfer which covered car tax and insurance for said van.

If my friend pays me back 2000£ without any interest, do I have to declare anything on tax since I paid those 600£ to the van owner through my bank account or can I treat it as part of the loan, which is how we intended it to be?
Thanks in advance for your time.

Putting aside the "Never lend money to friends..." argument, no there will be no tax implication.  Firstly, you've made nothing out of the loan, secondly, how would anyone know anyway?  Unless you've paid the money out of a business account that you own?  But if it's just an ordinary personal account, then no issue as far as HMRC is concerned.
  • Everything was done through personal bank accounts, I just wasn't sure of how to navigate this whole this situation.
    Thanks for the answer!
