If someone increases something by 100%, then it doubles it's current size, right?

If someone increases something by half, or 50%, then its half as big again, yes?

If National Insurance is "increasing by 1.25%" then that's 1.25% of it's current amount, right, not 1.25% of gross wage.

So increasing a £100 contribution by 1.25% should result in a contribution of £101.25.

Raising a 9% stamp to 10.25% is a 13.9% increase and passing it off as only a 1.25% increase is misleading.

  • And does 2% become 3.25%?  A 62.5% increase in my eyes.

Fortunately not (out of) my pocket!

Yes it would, but looks like bbc have corrected their language to quote percentage points rather than simple % of magnitude.

Fully agree. Its 'how to lie with statistics' again!
