Due to redundancy I changed employer and returned my company car 21.8.20 .  Started new job in the September but with no company car so I informed HMRC i no longer have a benefit of a car and they adjusted my tax code.  Last week I received a letter from HMRC to say I have underpaid tax by just over £1000.  I spoke again to HMRC but this time they tell me I am taxed on the benefit of a company car  - the full amount for 12 months even though last 7 months I did not have a car. I kept asking the question why and have tried to check HMRC rules but cannot get a second opinion.   On checking my P11D from last employer the benefit on there is apportioned so a little confused.
Any ideas /guidance please?

These things tend to depend on the facts so,

What happened when they adjusted your tax code?  It should have retained the company car benefit entry, albeit for a lesser amount.

What benefit is shown on your 2020:21 P11D?

What benefit is shown on your 2020:21 tax calculation from HMRC?

thanks for your response.  managed to speak to another adviser at HMRC and they have my P11D which shows the reduced benefit amount and looks like they are adjusting my tax code back .... takes a long time to sort these things out but hoping all done and dusted!
