Can my grandfather pay for my wedding in care.

My grandfather wishes to pay for our wedding or at least make a contribution but is now in a care home and he pays for all his own care costs, he is wealthy and  has significantly above the minimum assessed assets, the wedding would be a small fraction of his assets worth.

My question is can he now do this or would they view it as deprecation of assets eventhough it's not likely to make any difference? I know there is a £3k gift allowed for tax reasons but not sure this applies.

  • In short, No.

It's his money and he wants you to have a lovely wedding, It's up to him what he does with his money.
  • Thanks, I just thought it could be viewed like he was trying to pass on wealth so that it wouldn't get used up in his care costs. Is it the fact that it would be for a specific thing like a wedding that makes this ok?
Otherwise i'm sure many care home patients would be handing over all their money to their family just to qualify for the free care, if it is up to them what they do with their money.

No one is going to scrutinise his spending now if he did want to spend it! But like you say if he did have to apply for care costs could be taken into account at that stage.
