mattress topper- sheets of foam?

need to soften up my mattress a tad, though topper prices i have seen are ridiculous.. what thickness foam would be needed, if i made a DIY version?
Long time comper, lapsed MSE'er. Have done a bit of banking, telecoms in my past..

That’s a how long is a piece of string question, how deep are your sheets? If you go too deep your sheets won’t fit. Foam will also be too hot. How are you going to keep the foam in place?
