You may not have factored in the short period Council Tax is usually paid over (10 not 12 months).

@Dazed_and_C0nfused - Yours was the correct solution. I didn’t realise that council tax is based on a daily rate over a 12 month period. When I did the maths it added up exactly as the revised payment schedule. It just appeared a higher amount as no payments were made in February and March.

So long story short - we have not been charged any backdated council tax from 2019/the date of our house purchase. The higher tax band only applies from the date the change was recorded by the VOA on 8/8/21 and the revised schedule of payments we have received from our council reflects this. 

It is a relief to know that we so far do not appear to be liable for backdated council tax (I will of course update if this changes) and I hope that this information helps anyone who finds themselves in the same position in future.

As the revised band has an effective date of 8 August 2021, there is no point in contacting the VOA, you need to clarify matters with your council. It may be that the council have structured the payments for the financial year 2021/22 so that they reflect the increase from 8 Aug, rather than 1 April.
