SIPP contributions and tax return

OH’s employer has lazily chosen Nest for employee pensions. Employer contributes the legal minimum and no further matching contributions. We are thinking of contributing the minimum required and investing the rest through her SIPP. Does the contribution to SIPP need to be declared on tax return, assuming basic rate tax…

I was able to get some adjustments made to my tax relief, including a rebate, all over the phone. It took bit of determination to get through to someone but they were very knowledgeable and efficient when I eventually got someone to pick up. They were clearly working form home at that point so that may have affected the "hanging on" time.
