How to know whether to stick or leave a job?

I lost my job in April and it took me almost 9 months to find another.

Previously I worked in "professional services" and never earned less than £50k in the past 6-7 years prior to this current job. When I was looking for another role, I was searching for something that was simple, not in sales as I was no longer interested in the high-pressure job with a lot of travel. The job I ended up getting is in sales. I am doing well, always one of the best performers, but the role is mind-numbing and I find myself not doing a lot of work and typing on forums. Still, my performance is better than everyone else. My main gripes is the micro-management (tracking everything from calls to emails) and the fact we are being pushed to sale something our clients did not sign up for.

I have an offer from another company that is paying closer to £50k compared to what I am on which is £36k with a near-impossible to hit bonus. The offer is however a one year contract. In terms of the role, the new offer is exactly what I am looking for and know I should do well in. But is it worth moving for a one year contract or should I just stick this one out despite the lower pay and the hate for the job.

How does one make a decision on these things?

  • Thanks, I've often wanted to start a thread along the lines of how do you know when you are in the right job.

For the moment, as much as I hate the job role, I do enjoy my time off mid week for weekend working, it splits the work days up quite well.

Why is the role only for a year? Could you scrutinise that?

It is always better to be looking for a job from a job and you could investigate if the one year contract might become permanrnt if not you can start looking for a follow on position. There is no value in staying somewhere you are unhappy unless there is no viable alternative.

You don't have any security of employment in the existing job so you won't really be in a very different situation if you take on the new one.  Any move is a risk but given that you really don't like the current job I would be inclined to go for it.  Continue to live as if you were on the current salary and you will have a buffer if the new job does end after a year.

My first thought was it's more than a year.

Rough number net  £28150 V £37650 or ~= 70weeks at the old job paid in 52weeks by the new one.

Stat holiday in job one 7.54 weeks in the new job 5.6 + 18weeks you don't have to work.

an extra ~16 weeks holiday over the same 70weeks

Split over 2 tax years it would be more if you did not work those extra weeks a the end

I agree - go for the new job.  Then start looking at 6 months to go (after you have explored extensions if you like it).  My view is in 12-18 months there will be a surge in economic activity and although nothing is guaranteed you will be looking from a better place in the new job
I think I saw you in an ice cream parlour
Drinking milk shakes, cold and long
Smiling and waving and looking so fine

Life's too short to do something you hate. Go for it!
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!
  • Just got the job offer officially through. Now I'm 51% leaning on leaving. I do feel bad as my current company gave me a job during lockdown where I was messed around by so many other places. Also, I'm leading the sales chart yet again so feel bad for leaving. With that said, I'm so unmotivated here I spend most of my time browsing the Internet.
