I want a laptop, advice sought and do I wait for the sales???

I am seriously contemplating purchasing a laptop as my mums PC needs replacing and was thinking I could give her mine which is a P4 3Ghz, 1GB RAM 2 x 200GB HD and firstly am wondering whether I would notice much of a a difference between a laptop and my PC (I mainly use it for music, internet and a few games like Football Manager) I am possibly looking to spend £350-£500 on a laptop.

Also I am wondering whether its worth buying one before Christmas or whether I should wait for the sales? If so where would be good places to look?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Steve

  • PC world have the following one here for around £300 web order price, if you buy it in store it is about £45 dearer, so your decision. The spec should suffice unless she is a serious gamer lol. Also, you could buy it through a cashback sites and earn cashback, I think PC world pay about 4% if my memory serves me right.

  • I have a laptop, only got one so I could see what the kids were upto instead of being in a fixed room. They are a lot slower than a PC and the screen is not so big.

Forgive me, but you couldnt be more wrong. And if this is the case then it is of your own doing. When you bought your laptop you are aware of the specifcation of it, and any PC you are comparing it to will of course probably be newer and of higher specification, which comes with the price. Yours is only one of many examples. Many laptops are made to match specifications of PCs. Also, again depending on what you spend the screens are no different to those sold with PCs. It is all about how much you spend/ are prepared to spend. Ergo...you get what you are prepared to pay for.

  • I dislike the laptop my DH bought for me last year and rarely use it, unless he's watching :)

I find it much more difficult to type with the keys being so flat and I really couldn't get on without a proper mouse.

Given free reign, I would choose a PC every time, but it's simply a personal choice.
I let my mind wander and it never came back!

Laptops these days are every bit as 'grunty' as their big brothers, desktops.
However, you may need to pay more for a similar spec.

I've used laptops for the past 6 years; now using my second Sony Vaio. I balance it on the armchair, while watching TV and toasting my toes. Defintely recommended.

Good luck in whatever you choose.
