This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!
As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Morning everyone. It may be another dull and damp day ahead, there's still mist over the sea and the sky is white. Yesterday was very blowy without much sunshine so I did what I thought was a white wash, mostly knickers. Turns out I had chucked in a yellow microfibre cloth in the other day so I now have lovely white knickers all with pretty lemon coloured elastic edgings. 🤣
My day was low level busy. I did lots but not in a stressful way. The table linen is now boxed up and in the garden barn to be dealt with at a later date. I cleared out a whole stack of paperwork from a bedroom drawer which I then burnt in the chimera. In amongst it all was my grandparents marriage certificate and my father's birth certificate - most odd as I didn't know I had these. There was also a photograph of a little known member of my dad's side of the family which I'll send onto family in Australia. As for today - no real plans yet. I may face the spare bedroom mess 🤭 or something else may well take my fancy.I hope that everyone is doing well. Happy Sunday to all.13 -
Morning All
It's not raining this morning but not looking promising. Showers all day yesterday but the evening was lovely, too late to do anything.
I was in a clearing out mood yesterday resulting in 4 binbags ready for the charity shop, I even ventured into the loft - there's a load of stuff of DS2's up there so I sorted that, all the clothes (apart from a couple of t-shirts he may still want) are in the charity bag, they probably won't fit or he doesn't want them so I've made a decision for him! Feels good to have a bit more order about the place.
The allotment saw 8 courgettes, I honestly can't believe they grow so quickly. The peas have finished so the plants are in the compost, it's given more room for the squash that are taking over the place. Won't belong until the sweetcorn are ready and I can't wait!
Hope you all have a good Sunday, take care. XX10 -
Morning all
Dry and bright here for now and meant to be nice for the day. I have a wash on the go which can be hung out afterwards.
I am off to London (or just outside) for the afternoon, its my aunties 80th Birthday and her two sons who live in Australia have paid for lunch for everyone in a lovely Italian restaurant, they would have normally flown over but they are not allowed to due to covid, so this is there way of treating their mum. It should be a good day with lovely food. OH is staying here and looking after the dogs as we had no one else available.
I need to have a quick tidy through and then go and get showered and ready.
Hope you all have good days xx12 -
Morning folks and thanks GERS for our new thread. RUBY what thoughtful sons your auntie has got. That sounds a lovely treat for you all.
I have been a busy bee since I got up with quite a lot of jobs done already but have now made the mistake of sitting down for a coffee break. I may not get going again! The washing machine is chugging away with my bedding on its last spin and I don't know whether to peg out or not! Out of the back window it's all blue sky but out of the front is a different story. Hmm which to believe! My phone forecast is a bit indecisive!
I washed the filters on my new vacuum yesterday for the first time and they now feel dry enough to put back together again - the trouble is can I remember where all the bits go?! The filters are more difficult to change than the GTech which were a doddle.
Have a good day folks if you can and ((HUGS)) for all our poorlies, poorly loved ones or those MIA. You are all missed. Take care one and all and be safe xx

Hi everyone,
Did you miss me? I took my laptop on holiday in hope but it turned out that there was no 4g signal so I couldn't tether it to my phone.
We had good weather for thee most part, perfect for walking, not too hot and not rainy. We had a night in Cartmel for our anniversary with a lovely meal. We ended up driving back to the site over the Hardknot and Wrynose passes which was an experience to say the least. We've done a lot of driving in the alps but this would rival that experience.
We've got Laura and Esben with us while Brian is away but they are going later today, we will be keeping Ziggy because they will be going to Scotland soon to visit Brian's parents, one in Glasgow, one on Barra. They will be flying up to Barra for the first time so can't take the dog.
Poppy, I saw your good news and was very pleased for you.
Ruby, enjoy your meal.11 -
Morning all; dull here as well
I slept in this morning, probably due to the wine I had yesterday, and I feel I'm still coming to.
Our bbq yesterday went well but DS couldn't come in the end as he's just moved in to a new flat share arrangement and one of the other 2 tested positive yesterday! Hopefully DS will be ok as he's been fully vaccinated for months but we'll have to wait and see.
Today we are hoping to go out for a geocaching walk if the weather stays ok. Nothing much in the way of bbq leftovers to eat, just some coleslaw and salad, so have defrosted a couple of burgers to have later as an easy meal. We do have pudding though!
Happy Sunday everyone.11 -
Ruby - what a lovely idea from the Oz boys, I hope that the meal is delicous.TA - can you look up the manual for your vacuum online? Most are there nowadays.Camelot - if you make this https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/courgette-orange-cake-cream-cheese-frosting give me shout!Snoozer - of course we missed you.
The Barra flights all land on the beach so the times are tide appropriate.
Wicked Lady - at least you had a good time with company. After I posted this morning I got word that my last remaining aunt died overnight in Germany. She was 95 and was suffering from Alzheimers for many years. My cousin is both devasted and relieved at the same time. Funnily enough I sent both my cousins (brothers) long emails last night, it's almost spooky. So, that's the last of that war-time generation gone from our families.I'm going to occupy some time this morning in doing more scanning and burning. I don't need to keep as much of the old documents as I have done. As I found out recently, all the important legal stuff - birth, death, marriage and divorce certificates are accessible online, especially to Registrars so the hardcopy is not needed any more. The wind here has died down significantly so all is calm and peaceful outside, well almost, the sheep are making a racket, the geese and joining in and the birds are tweeting away over the Niger seed feeder!

GERS I have the manual that came with it but, as usual with these manuals, the diagrams are not very explicit! Anyway it's now all back together again and a quick test picked some cat hairs up so obviously done it right! And sorry to read about your auntie, it's difficult deciding whether it's a blessing or a sad loss under such circumstances.
SNOOZER welcome back! Every time you mention Cartmel my mind is cast back about 60 years to the traumatic couple of days I had hiking there for my Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award!! We left after an overnight camp at Humphrey Head with a specific route we had to take, following grid references all the way. Going directly there would have been too easy, we had to do a circular tour of about 10 miles, which included an overnight camp at a farm just outside the village.. I might add here that it had bucketed it down all day and we were like drowned rats! The purpose of the ordeal was to study Cartmel Priory and I still have my record book, diagrams and photos of it all to this day! Anyway we must have done something right as the four of us got our award!
The weather doesn't know what to do here. No rain but the wind is still blowing and the clouds are coming and going at speed.

Morning, late posting. Despite me saying I was not buying anything else for the garden, DB insisted he absolutely needed farmyard manure. I also needed nippon, the ants are something else, red, normal and flying. The huge spiders are also looking for a winter residence, One in the kitchen sink and one in the toilet....aarrggg, I can cope with the long legged ones, but not these, DB got out of bed a bit quicker than he thought this morning.
Next door neighbour cut the hedge yesterday, we tested the arch and its rock solid do need to use small screws on the side bits though, they have been put on with a thing that shoots staples in. I guess I will have to drill pilot holes for the screws. my hands are not able to cope with a staple gun any more. Can just about manage the drill.
Veg for supper prepared before we went out. I have got a pack of the sirloin of beef I cooked the other week out, will reheat it on top of the veggies. Crumble for dessert.6 -
Gers,
Yes to the beach landing, Brian's family cottage (now passed down to his dad) overlooks the runway). It features on a lot of postcards.
TA, the Priory is lovely. I don't know if you like historical fiction but there are a couple of books by Elizabeth Chadwick based on the life of William Marshal, the founder of the Priory (The Greatest Knight and the Scarlet Lion). Well worth a read.
Wicked Lady, I hope your son escapes the infection.9
