Renting on a DMP

Hi,

Sorry if this is in the wrong section!

I was hoping to get some advice/hear of people’s experiences when it comes to applying to rent a property when on a DMP (debt management plan).

I’m currently renting my flat privately and the DMP started during the tenancy so never affected this however since all of that my boyfriend has moved in (he’s well aware of my DMP) and we’ve realised how small the flat really is and have talked about hopefully moving to somewhere bigger but obviously I’m really worried that I’ll be rejected due to my defaults and wondered if anyone has any knowledge or experience in this?

I’ve looked online and found a lot of conflicting information such as “they only look for CCJs not defaults” but then seen others that say they do look at defaults.

My rent here is actually quite high and there are houses for the same price so I could definitely afford it even with my DMP payments it just comes down to referencing!

Thanks so much in advance

There are two types of check a landlord can run on you.

The first is something called, ironically enough, a "landlord check", this just checks public records, and confirms your identity, which is all most landlords really need.

The second, is of course, a full on credit check, which reveals everything about your finances.

The choice of which check to run is at the landlords discretion, some do one or the other, some do both.

To avoid disappointment, you could ask first which type of check they run on you.
