NHS I’ll health retirement

Options
Hi
can anyone please help me with a query? If you get Tier one ill heath retirement under the 1995 section , can you work for the NHS after your normal pension age? If so, would there be any penalties? My situation is I am now 4 months into long term sickness and will be 59 in 2 months but it is looking like I will not recover sufficiently to return to my previous role before my normal pension age (60 under the 1995 section). However, there is a possibility that my condition may improve in the longer term.

"To qualify for ill health retirement benefits you must retire from pensionable employment because of illness or injury and either: • be permanently incapable of efficiently carrying out the duties of your employment because of illness or injury (Tier 1 pension)"

Tier 1 ill health is your accrued pension to date, therefore if you are going at 60 anyway you will pretty much receive full pension either way. As I understand it, you can return to work but you cannot return to the same job - otherwise you wouldn't get ill health retirement.
