The TransPennine Express takes 3 hours 12 minutes to make the 175 mile journey,  city centre to city centre.

  • It has 9 stops, 220 mile journey by car so 3 hours 12 isn't bad given they can't go full speed the whole way and have to slow for stations.

London to Edinburgh is only 4 hour 23 as it just has 6 stops as an example

Thank you JGB. £87 for a return is not cheap but it does do it. Rather slow for a train, average speed only about 95 kph, but I suppose it's Britain...

when are you travelling? have you tried Trainsplit to see if the price can be reduced?

Might it be any faster to take a commuter train to Glasgow and go from there?

I thought trainsplit gave you split ticketing for the same train, so you should still be able to do the 3 hours 12.

Realistically you're not going to get anything faster; it's a push to drive it in under 4 hours unless it's really quiet.

There's no direct flights since FlyBe went bust, but you can do Edinburgh to Birmingham in 1:15 and then rent a car from there. It's unlikely to be worth the hassle by the time you get to the airport, wait at the airport, get to the rental car and then get to your destination.

Just take the 3:12 train and read a book.

Yeah a day trip is going to be a pretty long day. But you can always just go down for the weekend instead.

Trainsplit is very flexible; you can ask it to provide the fastest journeys, best value or it can try to find cheaper slower journeys.
