I'll health pension

Hi, we are both coming up to 57, my wife is not well.She has  been diagnosed with cancer, it is not clear what her life expectancy is, but I cannot see  how she can return to work regardless of how well she responds to treatment. As I understand it, treatment will extend her life but not cure her condition.
My question relates to the lgps, she has a deferred pension, she is currently on sick leave and has a career average Tps. Does anyone know how this situation would be treated by the pension administrator's ? 
I wonder if she could take early retirement ?

Further to xylophone's link to LGPS regs, your wife's initial application for payment of her deferred benefits on ill health grounds must be made to her old employer, regardless of how long it is since she left.

Her ex employer will arrange for her to be medically assessed by their occ health Dr, who will recommend (or not) that the pension should be paid on ill health grounds.

If the recommendation is positive, then your wife's ex employer will instruct the LGPS to offer payment.

Note that if ill health isn't approved, then your wife may still take voluntary payment of her benefits as she is over 55 - but her pension would be actuarily reduced for early payment.  This request may be directed straight to the LGPS.
