Refund to Credit Card in Arrears

Help this is a really tricky one!
I have a MasterCard in arrears for one month waiting to default before starting a DMP
I booked a holiday using the card in December 2019 and it was moved last year to this year.
The hotel has just cancelled the booking and is going to refund my payment method !!!
It was for myself and a friend and now I need to pay her half back to her but sadly since we paid the bill I have ran up a debt on the card and I won’t be able to take the refund back.
The card I actually used expired in December 2020 although the current one I have is the same number just different expiry and Security number.
Do I have any options other that to come clean?
thanks in advance

Did your friend give you cash? What did you do with that, assuming you haven't paid the card with it?

Time to come clean and see what repayment she wants and when.

I cleared it at the time but since did a balance transfer that I can no longer sustain. I thought the hotel might refund to a different card ?

The hotel will refund to the same payment method the booking was made from.
You will need to explain to your friend.
Only other option might be asking them for vouchers instead.

If you tell them the original payment method is no longer available, they should, subject to their own policies, refund to a different card.

Pick up the phone and speak to them is my advise.

Bearing in mind the booking was made in 2019, it would be very unreasonable of the hotel management to refuse to refund to a different card. I would give them a call to give them your bank/ updated card details.

Thanks everybody for the advice, the hotel is Portuguese so getting them to understand is more of a problem. I have called them and I need to wait for them to seek advice.

You have all posted nice positive comments with no judgement, it is much appreciated.

I will let you know what happens
