PS2 chipping

Having owned my PS2 for over three years I've decided I fancy getting it chipped to play "back-up" copies of my games ;)

I've no idea what the costs are or how easy it is to find somewhere that will do it. Can anyone give me any info?

I asked around about this a few months ago, I was told it's not as easy to chip a PS2 as it is a PS1, and it might mess up the system :-/ Unless things have changed? I would like to chip mine too :)

i have a flip top on my ps2 and use the swap magic cds to play backups, easy enough to install yourself (no soldering)

all is explained here (theres a vid clip of how it works)
be sure to check your model is correct if you order, also explains how to do this on the site.

other places sell cheaper but this site has the most info

yep, simple as. there are a couple of games that arent compatible but this can be solved using a tool called ps2 loader which is available free for download (just burn to cd).

never had a game not work, highly reccomend.

  • there are also emulators you can get free which allow you to play old console games on your ps2, such as:

    super nintendo
    NES
    master system
    mega drive
    commadore 64
    spectrum ZX

but ps2 needs to be chipped (or have flip top and swap magic as above) to work.

Thanks for everyones help. After a little further investigation of my own I've decided to go for a slide card with the Swap Magic discs.

The slide card basically allows you to get the DVD tray open without the PS2 resetting, thereby allowing you to boot from the Swap Magic discs (one for CDs and one for DVDs) before swapping it with the "backed-up" game disc. The beauty of this system is both the cost and the fact you don't need to open your PS2! ;D

Best price I've found is £19.99 inc delivery on QXL:-

You can still find some modchips for sale but they are not based in the uk.

Modding a ps2 is a nightmare anyway. About 27 wires to solder onto the board/chips.

they work great, have been using for a while now. i use the flip top lid though not the slide card, but both methods do the same job when used with the swap magic discs.

to use the slide card you have to remove the front of the eject tray, instructions can be found here.
