Self employment month in hand advice

Hi

i am due to start work as an associate with a company at the beginning of September. I have never been self employed before.

They’ve advised that I will not get paid until the end of October as it’s a month lying on.

I’m currently getting universal credits while I wait for this role to start. Does anyone know how long I can continue on UC for?

As you are self employed, you will be invoicing them for your services.  What payment terms have you agreed?

There is some information from Citizens Advice here -

    https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/benefits/universal-credit/on-universal-credit/how-universal-credit-works-if-youre-self-employed/

BUT it seems that you will have to contact DWP at some point - soon - to clarify your position, especially as you may still be entitled to some UC.

You will also need to register with HMRC as self employed.

I am a bit concerned that this employer has stipulated that you won't be paid for two whole months. How are they expecting you to survive financially??? I have never heard of/don't even know what 'lying on' means, employment-wise.

As JCS1 has said above, you will need to invoice them. And it's usually monthly, not every two months.

    What contract have you signed?

Not being funny but it seems to me that you really do need to be very careful with this particular employer.

Makes sense for self employed. Bill at the end of September for that month. If their standard terms are 30 days net then payment will be end of October.
They see it as a standard business transaction.

They will invoice in Sept & get paid in Oct. It's no different to when a tradesperson gets materials from a builders merchants, even if the invoice is raised on the 1st Sept, the due date won't be until the end of the following month.

It is an agency that gets me work in a school. They have to invoice the school and then I have to invoice them. They stated that I won’t get my first pay until end of October.
