Taxed owed - Tax code missing?

Hi All,

My partner has just received a letter from the HMRC saying she owes just under £2000 in tax from the tax year 20/21.

During some of this period she had two jobs, taking on another job due to being on furlough from her main job for 7 months.

It looks like she was being taxed on her second job with the code 1250L but wasn’t paying any tax on her main job.

She didn’t pick up on this (don’t ask me how) but my question is what would be reason her main job didn’t have a tax code for her?

Since March this year she only works at her main job, she said spoke to HMRC today who didn’t appear helpful in saying how this happened and have said they’re now putting her on tax code 760L, I’m going to speak to them on her behalf later but just wanted to gain knowledge on all this if possible :)

many thanks

She will have had a tax code at her original job, being on furlough wouldn't make any difference to that.

    What does her P60 show?

She was possibly on 1250L at both jobs.

Is it possible she incorrectly completed the new starter declaration when she started the new job?

Sounds like she has managed to get an unexpected interest free loan from HMRC, is she paying the tax back in January or through her tax code from April 2022 to April 2023?

The 760L code is unlikely to have anything to do with owing the £2,000

    Thanks for your reply Dazed

So she’s currently at work now looking at her payslips, it shows that she was on the tax code 1122L at her main job but no tax was being paid since June 2020 until May 2021 with one month showing -162 tax paid the next showing -3.00 month after with the follow 6/7 months showing 0 tax paid.

Main Job Tax Code and dates:

    02/20 - Tax Code BR M1
    03/20 - Tax Code BR M1
    04/20 - Tax Code 1129L
    05/20 - Tax Code 612T
    06/20 - 03/21 -  Tax Code 1122L
    04/21 - present - Tax Code 1129L

I think the 760L has been given to try make up for her not paying any tax April and May from the current financial year.

Your partner can sign up online to her very own HMRC account. All the info will be on there.

I've always found it easier just to write a letter to HMRC when I've had problems with tax (and I've had a few, they do make mistakes and I've found some of them).

I've written to them and then they take or don't take action and put the results on my private HMRC account online.

Please do let your partner sort out her own tax issue, she's capable enough to have been holding down two jobs. I don't think they'll let you speak to them on her behalf, anyway. I hope not, as that'd be a real data breach.

    Thank Mal,

I’ll inform her about the sign up.

Looks like a number of issues by both her employer and HMRC. The HR colleague at her work is back tomorrow so she will find out more then.
