Hi
As I've submitted my 20-21 tax return today, will the balancing payment I owe by July 31 update soon to reflect 20-21 return actual tax amounts..?  If I've overpaid tax, I assume hmrc will refund it via my debit card used to pay? do I need to claim the refund myself? thanks.

  • Balancing payments aren't due until 31 January 2022 (for 2020:21 returns).

Normally in the next few days your Self Assessment account will be updated to make any adjustments necessary to the amounts payable.

If you have paid more than is owed by 31 July 2021 and claimed a refund on your return then the surplus is refunded, where possible to the card you have paid on
  • W2 is likely to refer to fortnightly pay and W4 four weekly
