Changing your name

I would like to hear specifically from people who have changed their surname or first name if it is the same procedure. What was the procedure you used to officially change it, whats were the problems you encountered or have found ? I have found a few websites on the web that offer a deed poll service but some charge £15 and others £40, do they do the same thing or what is the difference ? Do you recommend the site you used ? I would eventually like to legally change my passport and bank account name etc Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Many Thanks in Advance.

  • You can call yourself by any first name that you like. Proving it will be difficult, however e.g. if you want to open a new bank account using your preferred first name, this will not match the first name shown on your ID (birth certificate, in particular).

If you want to change your surname, then you can only do so by Deed Poll - or, I think, there is something called a statutory declaration.

Once you've done that, you can then change your passport, bank accounts etc. Youl will always need to provide your birth certificate and deed poll/statutory declaration to prove your ID in the future.

Just curious ... is it really that important?

I changed my first name by Deed Poll some time ago and it is a relatively straightforward process. You follow the same procedure regardless of whether you are changing a forename or a surname. Once you obtain a Deed Poll you can get your Passport reissued into your new name along with your bank cards etc.

You can use the site http://www.ukdp.co.uk to order a Deed Poll pack that includes a personalised Deed Poll document as well as other information you will find useful.
  • We would like to add a middle name for our daughter (9yrs old). Obviously we would like it added to her new passport when its due in a couple of years time.

    How do we do it?

As discussed above, you would do it by Deed Poll

You don't need to pay anyone anything if you can find a Deed Poll to copy. Just insert your own details and that's as "official" as it needs to be. As long as you then intend to be known solely by your new name, you shouldn't have any problem.

I don't agree with the person earlier who said it would be difficult to open bank accounts etc. Just get a new driving licence and passport in your new name, and change your utility bills over too. I've never had to produce a birth certificate to open a bank account, just passport/driving licence and utility bills.

Not being able to change your birth certificate is not a problem because you can use a passport for opening a bank account etc.
