Chateauneuf Du Pape - Tesco

Tesco have a deal on their Chateauneuf Du Pape

It's an absolutely *gorgeous* wine, it's fantastic for Christmas dinner! We have a bottle every year and pay almost £13 for it and this year it's down to just under £7! Couldn't help but stock up :)

Just to make people aware, this is not the original Chateauneuf Du Pape but as you said, Tesco's own.

I have to disagree that this is gorgeous wine but then everyone has different tastes. We had this at the weekend and it was just ok, pleasant but let's just say I'm glad we only bought the one bottle.

I'm definitely not a wine snob, I just like what I like and this is not a patch on the original :D
  • I'm not keen personally, had a bottle to try in advance of Christmas, and it's a bit harsh, but worth a try for the price! I'm going to spend a bit more on a bottle i think.

Totally agree, each to their own but this is very much the poor cousin of the original.
Do not allow the risk of failure to stop you trying!

Not to my taste either.. Poor cousin. Save your money....
  • Just what is the "original Châteauneuf-du-Pape"? That's a bit like saying it's not the original Rioja!!

I am no expert but Châteauneuf-du-Pape is my favourite French wine. Much more so than Bordeaux.

Every good off license would have at least two Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines. I tend to go for the one M&S do, which cost around 20 quid.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape, as far as I know it's a small town close to Avignon. As the other poster said, it's like Rioja or Bordeaux, each winery produces different quality of wine. Needless to say the year in which the bottle is produced plays a big part in terms of quality. Usually if it's an appellation, the minimum quality is assured....I think...

Having said that, Rioja (esp Campo Viejo Grand Reserva) is my choice of red at the moment. More versatile imo.

Thanks to the OP though, £7 is good even for a 'cousin' (???).
  • I personally think this is a lovely wine, and is as 'original' a Chateauneuf du Pape as any other. But each to their own is definitely appropriate.

This is currently out of stock, but if it comes back in its a bargain. Basically you get 12 bottles from Tesco Wine, and use a £15 discount code or 1000 clubcard points to get the bottles for £5.80.

    ............but its French.

There are some many other good red wines from other countries to choose from, without spending a fortune on a bottle of mediocre French wine.

Do you dislike France? Seriously, France makes some wonderful wines, as well as many that would be better used as lighter fuel and should never be allowed anywhere near a human mouth! The problem is that us consumers are not told which is which: many merchants apparently believe that if we see that something is French we will pay a premium price and enjoy it as if it were a top quality wine, even though it is utterly disgusting.

I don't dislike France. Its just unless you know a lot about wines and the regions they are grown, grape varieties etc and you are prepared to pay, you end up with some really horrible French wine.
Personally I think French wine is over rated, but I believe they need to raise their game because of the competition they are getting now.

I'd rather buy a reasonably price Spanish, South Africa, Chillian or New World wine etc and know the wine was going to taste nice. Its just about choice.
