Hi, I was employed full time until 22/12/2020; when I left, total pay to date was £12194.61 and total tax paid was £562.40.  Tax code 1250L.

I became a full time carer to my sister from 23/12/2020 until she passed away on 14/01/2021.  I registered as self-employed with HMRC and received a UTR.  I subsequently advised them in 01/21 that I was no longer self-employed.

I have now been advised by HMRC that I need to complete a tax return - my total earnings whilst self-employed were £750.  The form states that it needs to be completed if earnings were over £1000 so do I still need to complete and return the form regardless?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Complete the return with details of all your income, not just self employment income. You will be able to claim the trading exemption for your £750 self employed income.

If you've never submitted an online self assessment it can look a bit daunting but there are lots of sections that you won't need to fill in. If you can't do it in one go or you need to check anything then you can save your progress as you go along and go back and modify it. You have until 31st Jan 2022 to submit it but the sooner you get it done, the sooner you can claim back the overpaid tax.
Sorry I can't think of anything profound, clever or witty to write here.
