"Be wary of news from the US that social media giants Facebook and Twitter have said there will be pay cuts for workers who move away from the expensive areas where the companies are based because they can now remote work.
In the UK, employees based in the most expensive parts of the country have sometimes been awarded an additional allowance, such as the London Weighting allowance. Advice must be sought if the employer seeks to put forward new contract terms that withdraw a location top-up allowance on the grounds that employees are now homeworking. Unions point out that employers make considerable savings when employees move to home working"

Yeah this was on the TV last year. It only affects Lindon l think? But to be honest l haven't seen an ad that adds London Weighting on to a role for a long time. It was subsumed in my salary when l was in the civil service. Made the pay look better than it was.2

I'm viewing this slightly differently, its not the pay weighting being in the firing line as such but the general substantive pay rates becoming eroded due to home working as employers start to view a benefit that many workers may accept a remuneration reduction in return from dropping out of the commute and a perceived easier life for the WFH individual. Personally I feel this is something to be resisted. Wait till bossware becomes more and more ubiquitous.
As for your CS salary being inclusive of weighting allowances, surely that was a positive due to becoming pensionable pay?0 -
On the other hand, OH has been moved into a team that primarily works in London - albeit they all work from home, and will do for the foreseeable future, and possibly permanently. He earns less than the equivalent grade in his team because he's 'not London'. He's also 'not happy' about it - why should they earn more for doing the same work, when the job can now be done from anywhere? Although, the chance of that being a successful argument for a pay rise? I'd say zeroExcuse any mis-spelt replies, there's probably a cat sat on the keyboard1

whilst I appreciate having been employed throughout the lockdown over the last 18 months I resent the fact that employers are now withdrawing benefits by stealth - including providing proper working kit, desks etc. Whether that's in an office in Canary Wharf or in the cupboard under the stairs we still all need to work in a safe and healthy way. I've seen a few too many people be undone mentally or physically due to the WFH practices that are now becoming more common place. Pay is just one part of the issue.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe, Old Style Money Saving and Pensions boards.
