Long term sick leave

  • Hi, thank you for your reply.  He just wants his life back but it’s so pitiful to see him like this.
He’s tried physio, pain management, medication but nothing helps/eases it.  He hasn’t slept properly for a year as his leg spasms when he’s resting.  He’s doesn’t care about money.  He just wants the nerve pain to ease.  Thank you.

He has seen various consultants and the leading chronic pain consultant in Wales,  who all confirm that his chronic nerve pain down all of his leg are from the operation that went wrong where the surgeon cut through his sural nerve.  He cannot walk now and this affects his mental health as he has never been out of work.
I think oh_really's response to this was to suggest getting legal advice.  I would agree.  Is this a case of medical negligence?

I'm not sure how a knee operation could affect the sural nerve... Are you sure it wasn't a calf problem? A sports injury? Did he injure himself at work?
  • Well it did. The operation went wrong.

Try to ignore the lay 'experts' with their questions and doubts about the way your husband is affected.  They obviously have far more in depth knowledge of the situation than the various consultants and other specialists your husband has seen.
I can understand how the whole things has put your husband into a downward spiral both mentally and physically, and trying to tell somebody in the situation to 'get on with it' or 'snap out of it' isn't simply pointless, isn't just pointless it's totally counter productive.  It looks as if he is going to have to accept that he will never be able to return to his old job, but that doesn't mean he will be incapable of working again.
  • Aw thank you ever so much for your empathy.  It means a lot.
Yes some people seem to know a lot but so little really.
I have to see him crying because he can’t get comfortable or get any respite from the pain.  He tears sheets from where his leg goes into spasm in bed so he can’t sleep. He can’t sit down for more than a few minutes without having to stand up.
He has never been on sick leave, even when he broke his foot in work.  This is a totally different pain.  It’s heartbreaking watching someone you love go through this and nothing can be done 😢
    Thank you again.
