Not being paid for August?!! LSA in a school

I wonder if anyone can help with this... my husband works in a school as an LSA and will be leaving next week to start a new job in September. The school have told him that he won't get paid for August as he started the job in March (2019) and pay is pro-rata. Does this sound right?
My husband is also on his second week of paternity leave at the moment and the school have said they will pay this second week at full pay, not half, as a sort of gesture for him not being paid in August.
Any thoughts?
Not great timing, as I'm a teacher but not currently in a school (took a year out to have our baby) and so not entitled to SMP, just MA. I've been privately tutoring this year but obviously can't at the moment with a newborn. We're also meant to be moving in August. confused

When he gave in his notice did he say it was with effect from the end of term, or from 31 August?  Is the school an academy or is it LEA run?  AIUI, in LEA schools payment would be made until 31 August, but academies seem to have their own rules.  What does his contract say?  I would ask why he's not entitled to holiday pay.....

Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

Check this, you would amazed at the number of incompetent HR staff who don't understand how pro-rata works. A pro-rata employee will be paid for the weeks they work but those payments are spread out across this year.

So if you work say 10 months in a year, your pay is generally average out over 12 months. I suspect the pay will be based on the tax year, April to April, so if it is pro-rata you need to work out how much your partner would earn for the weeks he in school and deduct the holiday periods in that time. Plus any extra days he is contracted to work over term days.

That should get you how much he should be owed in total and make sure he is getting that. Frankly I wouldn't trust HR to work this out, most of them would struggle to count to 10 if they weren't allowed to look at their hands.
