Do you have the option of going part time or if the investments, in the short term, fell would you find a job to supplement investment income? Do you have skills/hobbies that could earn some income - not sure how much your annual requirement is so this may/may not work.
It just gives you a back up plan. The more flexibility/options you can create the better able you are to cope with whatever is thrown at you. We are both self employed and have diversified so that income comes from a number of avenues allowing the option of semi retirement.
Your wife might then be happier?

Could be an option. I might do contracting work, which is highly paid and often short term.
