Overpais standing order payment

Options
I  recently came to close an old bank account and noticed a standing order payment of £11.00 per month going out to High Peah Boro Council fo a council owned leisure centre membership which had not been used since 2009. They say they tried to contact me over the years but I had the same house and telephone number for the past 20 years. I asked for a refund of fees going back to 2009 but they say they will only pay me 6 years fees and are not legally entiled to pay anything beyond 6 years. In fact they say they are not legally entitled to pay be anything at all. I am 68 years of age and have asked that they refund me this money on the basis of fairness. Any advice would help please

Six years is a decent result. As they say, they don't need to refund anything, so it depends on how hard you want to push, and whether they may withdraw their offer if you do.
