Rail Split Ticket Refund

My wife bought tickets on 13th May from #Raileasy
https://www.raileasy.co.uk/?/ for a trip to Durham on 20th July from our home in Devon to see our son who is at university there. His plans have now changed and he will now be at home. Raileasy now seem to be saying they will not refund unless we are going to use it to re-book new dates, unless we have doctor's letter! Anyone else faced this issue??
If your tickets are non-refundable or the firm terms and conditions do not allow refunds then they are correct.
Why not rebook for another date when he is at uni (assuming he hasn't graduated) or use it for a day out1 -
Our son has finished his degree, so we have no need to travel again soon to Durham. My wife had upgraded the tickets to first class as a birthday surprise for me, so we will be dumping over £350! I think our only option is to request a refund/credit for the same journey again next year.

You can submit a refund request and providing you make the same journey (same origin, destination, number of passengers) within 12 months of the original booking date, you will have the 350 quid taken off the cost of any such ticketsYou pay the difference (if more) but cannot get anything back (if less)0
