Marriage Allowance

My wife and I completed all the relevant details for the above last week via HMRC/Government Gateway, online.

Once completed it just took us back to the first page again, almost as if we hadn't even completed the required info. We've had no email to confirm our submission or for anything else.

Is this normal?

Which of you was the applicant and which tax years did that person apply for?

I was the applicant as I've been earning under the threshold and following on from the article on this site, I think we went back about 3 or 4 years.

I applied on line last week and I immediately got an email confirming my application was successful.

So that's odd.

Strange. I was declared bankrupt back in 2018 and when I login to the gateway it goes to my old Business Tax Account. So maybe that's the reason? I hadn't logged in for ages and I noticed it states I still owe them £4k even though this was written off 3 years ago. Any advice guys?

Thanks for that. So in other words I have to set up a new SA "account" as it were due to bankruptcy and then apply for the marriage allowance under the new details?

Yes you do. You are effectively an entirely new person for tax purposes after bankruptcy and require a new UTR.
