Jury Service Expenses etc

Not sure if this is the right place to post.  I’m shortly doing jury service and I wondered about expenses and employer details.

I know they reimburse travel cost and £5.71 per day for food and drink expenses.  Does anyone know how this works?

For food and drink do you need receipts? What if you bring in food from home?

Do you submit expenses online?  Only I live 3 train rides away from the court so won’t be able to hand in there.

Also if your employer is paying you as normal during your jury service, will the court ask for your employer contact details?  Only I feel a bit anxious if they let my employer know what time they release me each day (if it is early) as I’ve got to get multiple trains to get home and don’t like the idea that my employer would be expecting me to login and work for rest of day when I’ll have technically done a long day with all the travel, even if they release me shortly after lunch for example.

You would still have receipts for what you bought?

If they release you at 12, you get home at 3, then just work until 5 or whatever time you would finish. Yes you get a form with release times etc and your employer sees this. It's not a case of you finish at 12, your employer pays you till 5 and you do what you like from 12 to 5.

Where I am the jury is in a cinema rather than the court and all done by video link. You stay in the same seat other than toilet purposes. Food and refreshments given at your seat.  Of course you may not be chosen.

When I claimed travel expenses at Southwark Crown Court 23 years ago, they just needed an example ticket stub and an expense claim form which details number of days you've been in and they will reimburse you on that basis. They might have improved the system since then but I imagine the concept should be similar!

When at Old Bailey about 15 years ago, they they provided me with an expense card to purchase items in their canteen (I didn't use it)

I had to provide employer details in all cases but like you (for the second two times) I didn't need to claim loss of earnings. As fair as I'm aware (and I probably would have known as I was handling HR for the most recent), they never provided any release times to my employer. When I was at Belmarsh (8 years ago), I took my laptop and was able to work between breaks and employer was flexible so I tried to be too.

I've done jury service 3 times - lucky me! Some probably not all that current comments above but my experiences have been that they let you know in good detail on your first day what you need to know and do and were helpful answering any queries you may have. I imagine that the processes differ depending upon the court you are assigned to
  • A couple of weeks before you start, you should get an information pack of how it all works. I did it years ago when I lived in London, and I have been called again later this year.
There is a lot of sitting around and waiting. My colleague was called recently, sat there the whole day on day 1, was told she would be contacted later that day after she was sent home, and she got a text saying she wasn’t needed any more.
Maybe ask your employer what their expectation is for hours worked. The court do make a note of what time you are released.

I think it probably depends on the local court.  We were given a pre paid card which was topped up by the daily amount every day you were there, it was for use in their canteen only.  My employer wasn't informed of anything regarding leaving times and days not called in even though I did a five week court case.  At my court you could submit your expenses forms via post.
