COVID - Working from home tax relief query

Hi all, I’m looking for a little bit of help. Sorry in advance if this has been asked elsewhere.

I work full time, as well as freelancing on the side a couple of days a month. My self-assessment for my freelance work is normally really basic - as I don’t have many expenses, so I just claim the £1000 trading allowance.

I’ve been working from home throughout the pandemic (for my full-time employment job) and I keep hearing about a working from home tax relief scheme that I could claim and was just wondering what's the best way to do this - if possible.

As I already have a government login for my self-employed work, I assume I would have to put it through with my self-assessment. I normally try to avoid any cross over between my employment and freelance taxes - just to keep it easy for me (my employer deals with that tax and I sort my self-assessment - easy!) However, if this is the only way, then I would do it. I’m curious if I go down that route, could it mess up the chance of claiming the trading allowance and would it make it worth my while?

Does anyone know if it’s possible to claim in my position, is it worth it and if so, how would I go about claiming this?

Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Your Self Assessment is for all taxable income, any PAYE tax deducted by your employer gets taken into account but it isn't separate, it's an integral part of your Self Assessment.

You just include any valid claim on the employment page of your return.  You need to tailor your return to get the relevant box available for completion.

It has no connection to the trading allowance and could save you anything from £0 to, in extreme circumstances, £187 in tax.
For most people it will save c£62.

Hi Dazed_and_C0nfused - thanks for the quick comment, I really appreciate it. Sorry for the confusion, yeah, it's included, normally a quick copy from my P60 just to outline what was paid.
Excellent, so it would be in the employment section and won't impact the trading allowance - that's great, thank you - I will get that done and hopefully save myself a few ££. Thanks again.
