People often say the risk of buying an ex council property is the cost of renovation works passed onto leaseholders but isn’t this true of any leasehold flat?

The issue with council is there tends to be no sinking fund so no rainy day money
which means you pay out more.Plus, depending on the estate there can be blanket changes to the whole
area not just your building.0 -
@tbo127 Council commisioned repair/replacement/improvement work is done to a "gold-plated" standard and typically costs a lot more than if similar work were done by a private freeholder. Also, they are more likely to deem work required when realistically it could perhaps wait for a couple of years. On top of all that, you may also have estate-wide improvements which they will try to pass on (it doesn't always work) to leaseholders.
