Another Tax Code Question

in Cutting tax
I started my new company last year (April 2020) and have been on an X tax code ever since, none of my colleagues are. I'm not self-employed and it's all PAYE. Having worked for 20 years previously I have never had an X tax code. Why now? Tax codes are a mystery to me and wonder if I should get an accountant to have a look? I know why they give an X but I just don't understand why that applies to me. Any comments or recommendations would be appreciated.

A code with suffix X is an emergency tax code.
Firstly, check your tax code notices on your government gateway account - if it still isn't obvious, I would call HMRC and ask them why the code is in place - they may be unsure of something or have inaccurate information. You don't need an accountant to do that for you.
If you are due a refund from 2020-21, it should be issued to you in due course. Usually June onwards.
(Accountant here, happy to answer questions!)If you have good thoughts, they'll shine out of your face like sunbeams & you'll always look lovely.0 -
Did you get paid by both old & new employers in April? That could explain it
