My partner started her new job in Feb 21 and ever since then, her tax code has been SD0.  Her previous employer were a useless bunch of abusive **** and refused to give her her P45 when she left.  They said it was uploaded to the system and she could get it from there despite not having access to the system as she had left and refused to post/print it.  I don't think her new employer got the P45 either, which is probably why her tax code is SD0.

She claimed a tax rebate and just got a small rebate for the 20/21 period but her tax code as of last month was still wrong.  She called HMRC and was on hold for an hour before getting cut off.  Does she just need to persevere with HMRC to get the code fixed or can she speak to her new HR/Payroll to sort it out?

Also, is there anyway of getting Apr, May, and potentially June 21s overpayments rebated now or does she have to wait until the end of the tax year?

  • She probably needs to sort this with HMRC now.

    Has she tried webchat?

Any refund due for the current tax year will be sorted by her current employer the first time they use her new tax code.

Has she checked her on line tax account, many things can be changed there.

If the ex-employer is being awkward then HMRC probably thinks that she still has both jobs.  She needs to make sure that they know she doesn't.  If ringing try early morning.

Definitely check the government gateway account. There should be a coding notice to tell her why she is on that code.  I cannot remember if you can make corrections online to tax codes, but if she calls them, it should be sorted pretty quickly.

My husband was oince on a K code as they believed he was earning in excess of £100k - I wish!  No idea where they got their info from...

Phone a soon as lines open..

Start dialling a few minutes before the time. You may find you get an answer as some employees may start early. If not you will be at the front of queue when lines open.
