Possible redundancy

Word is going around my current workplace that they plan to make people redundant. Nothing has officially been announced but the rumour started from somebody close to the boss so likely to be true.
I'm just wondering whether they have to actually inform us of potential redundancies or whether they can just spring it on us like they had planned originally?
