High Income Child Benefit Charge

Hi All, I understand but I just assumed (wrongly of course now) people who are PAYE that tax codes and payments are adjusted automatically as everything goes through the HMRC - I'm sure I can't be the only one too. I guess its not an excuse but I'm the type of person who likes to have payments 'automated'. I do that with my credit card balance payments and all my bills - take the full amount when its due for this very reason - so I don't miss paying anything I'm supposed to and be stung with a charge so this is frustrating. So does anyone know of an appeal process success stories?

Hi All, please can anyone advise if I can appeal against the penalty I have received of circa £800? I'm reading online that you can appeal if your income went over the threshold after 2015 and/or you do not complete a self assessment. There's a lot of guidance on the web, but not much of it is clear? I'm really confused.

However, some people have had success appealing against any penalty charged.

Thanks Poppy, but there isn't an explanation here on what grounds. I already told them at the time when I acknowledged the payment return about why I shouldn't be fined but that didn't seem to deter the operator. I still received the fine.I mean my only grounds is that I didn't know. Is that an acceptable reason or have people had success with a different reason/approach?0

I can't imagine for a minute that "not knowing" would help you here. It was well published in 2013 and it's the claimants responsibility to report all changes.

Do you know that you are responsible for managing your savings tax if you exceed the personal savings allowance and that this reduces around the same level of income as child benefit?Statement of Affairs (SOA) link: https://www.lemonfool.co.uk/financecalculators/soa.phpFor free, non-judgemental debt advice, try: Stepchange or National Debtline. This happened to me as my salary rose above 50K in 2017. The twist is that I wasn't receiving the child benefit, my ex-wife was. But as my name was on as the applicant, I got the bill.
I did argue my case and it went to a tribunal which has been delayed due to covid. In any case, the HMRC adjusted my tax code until the due amount was taken from me.
I am expecting to have it paid back when I win the tribunal0
