HMRC SELF ASSESSMENT TAX FORMS 2020 – 2021

I would really value some advice to help complete the above Tax Form.

My State Pension is paid weekly on a Monday, it seems there are 53 Mondays in this Tax Year ending on Monday 5th April.  My last payment at the rate for the year was dated Monday 5th April (Easter Monday).

Do I include this 53rd payment on the 2020 – 2021 form which makes it one week more than The Pension Services allocated for the financial year?    OR

Do I put it on the next Tax Year 2021 – 2022 together with the new pension rate which started on 12th April 2021?

Your help will be much appreciated.

  • You don't declare what was actually paid.

    Box 8 State Pension
Use the letter ‘About the general increase in benefits’ that the Pension Service sent you to find your weekly State Pension amount.
Add up the amount you were entitled to receive from 6 April 2020 to 5 April 2021 and put the total in box 8. Do not include any amount you received for Attendance Allowance.
If your State Pension changed during the year or you only received it for part of the year, multiply each amount by the number of weeks that you were entitled to receive it. Add up your amounts carefully.

When you are weekly paid I believe that you do.  You need to remember that HMRC go by the figures the DWP give them.  I have been receiving my state pension for almost 10 years & they have only got it right once & that was a coincidence due to the actual dates used.  I do know people who just accept what they say though, which would save money on 53 week years, but cost in some 52 week years.

The taxation of UK state pension should strictly be on the accruals basis. See https://www.gov.uk/hmrc-internal-manuals/employment-income-manual/eim74101
