Universal credit and housing benefit

Options
Hi
I'm sadly in the position of going to be needing to claim for universal credit (I believe it's now called) so can I get my full rent paid for me separate to this as housing benefit? My apartment is with housing association and costs £120 per week as it's a new build. But if the 2 benefits are combined and yes full rent is paid how will I survive on whatever left on my benefits as I'm sure it'll not be much money left coz my rent so high!!!! Advice please?

You can only make a new claim for Housing Benefit if:

    • you are State Pension Credit Age or older  (if you have a partner you both need to be of  pensionable age to apply for Housing Benefit)

    • the Housing Executive has placed you in temporary accommodation

    • you live in supported accommodation (including sheltered housing for older people)

If you don't meet that criteria you would be including some rent help from Universal Credit

Whether your full rent would be covered would depend on the size of the property and your other income
