Voluntary Class 2 NI contributions

It says on this page (https://www.gov.uk/voluntary-national-insurance-contributions/who-can-pay-voluntary-contributions) that:

You cannot pay voluntary contributions if:

• you’re eligible for National Insurance credits

But what if the credits were awarded after you'd already paid voluntary class 2 contributions? Is there a way of using the voluntary contributions for a different year?
