Specsavers prescription seems worng

Hi,
I recently paid for an eye test with Specsavers and was given the following prescription for glasses
R:
SPH : +0.75 CYL -3.25 AXI 150.0
L
SPH : +1.00 CYL -4.50 AXI 25
I have ordered two pairs of glasses from an online retailer using this prescription and am waiting for delivery)
In the meantime, I was also offered a free contact lens trial which I took. I've been wearing the contacts daily for a week now and notice that although my vision is better than without the contacts, its still no where near the clarity I get in my old glasses. I dug out my old prescription (not via specsavers) and discovered the glasses I've previously been using were:
R:
SPH +1.25 CYL -3.00 AXI 148
L:
SPH +1.25 CYL -4.25 AXI 25

I am scheduled to see the optician again tomorrow, but does anyone have any experience of this? I appreciate my newly ordered online glasses will likely go straight in the bin as they won't refund something that is not there mistake, but wondered whether specsavers have offered another eye test or another free contact lens trial with a prescription that's needed altering?

Yes, if you feel the prescription is wrong they will retest and replace as necessary; this happened with my last specs.  For your third party specs, maybe if you return them, they will redo the lenses for a lower amount than buying all new again.

Your eyesight can change, that is why regular eye tests are recommended.
I would check with Specsavers - and maybe take your previous prescription with you. How long ago was that one given to you?

  • Thanks both - I do hope specsavers accept that the prescription is off and retest, I'll take a copy of my old prescription with me.

    Good Luck.

Moved town and Specsavers here wouldn't accept their script was wrong.  Despite me not being able to read a (distant) sign in the shopping centre that was clear with my old glasses.
Repeat test confirmed I "preferred" their new script, apparently.

    I won't darken that franchise's doorstep again.

Your prescription is not suitable for most contact lenses. with that level of astigmatism a standard contact lens is not going to correct your vision. I am suprised that that was not discussed during the contact lens trial?
Their is little real diffrence between the 2 spectacle prescriptions.

I would expect only 70% of vision in standard contact lenses witht that prescription.

    Why?
There is very little difference between the two prescriptions, particularly for the left eye. In fact you could get that much difference between two eye tests done on the same day depending on how much coffee you have drunk etc! Do you reliable know your PD (which won't have been put on the prescription as they are not legally obliged to do so)? Otherwise the online supplier will use an average which may not be optimum for you.

As Kirtondm has suggested, you would need quite specialised contact lenses to correct that degree of astigmatism properly. That should have been made clear to you and is certainly a point to discuss.
  • Thanks for the comments. I assumed the .50 difference in one eye would actually be quite significant paired with a .25 difference with the other. I did say I actually had been told previously (albeit 6-8 years ago) that I couldn’t have contacts due to the level of astigmatism and she assured me that not only were there new providers that did offer lenses that corrected the astigmatism but that they would be almost as perfect as my glasses. I will discuss further with the optician tomorrow, maybe I’m just stuck with horrible glasses.

the upside is I contacted the company I ordered my glasses from and they are happy to replace them with an altered prescription free of charge next week, which is a relief!

It is a bit more complicated than that. Although the basic power of the right lens (CYL) has been increased by 0.5 the negative astigmatic correction (AXI) has also been increased by 0.25 which partly offsets that. Until you get your new glasses and wear them for long enough to get used to you won't know if it is correct (most likely) or not. The contact lens issue is far more involved and if you want as good (or even better) vision than with your glasses you will need more specialised lenses.
  • Left eye change is negligible.
If anything, the right eye although small maybe a noticeable change since both the sphere and cylinder/astigmatism have changed
(Both more minus, so doesnt offset in this case).

The problem with high levels of astigmatism and contact lenses is that you need a toric lens which will rotate slightly as you blink and you often find the vision is a bit more unstable.  Fair play to your optican if they can get vision as good as specs with a 4.50cyl in a standard lens.
