Tooth Removing and Dental Implant -what are the steps to go about doing this and do you shop around?

Hi All,
My NHS dentist has said my root canal has failed on one of my molars and that a second course of root canal would unlikely be succesffull.   I have decided I would I like the tooth removing and having an implant.  I am due to go back tomorrow for a filling and to discus what I would like to.

Whats is the best way to go down the implant route.  The NHS clinic I go to offers implants as a private patient.  However - should I shop around?  How do i know this is the best place for me?  Also do I ask the NHS clinic to remove the tooth for me, or wait until I have decided on the place that is doing the implant?  I get a little pain from the tooth but nothing serious.

Thanks

I’m not an expert but I’m halfway through a dental implant at the moment.  IMHO I would ask your regular dentist for a referral to an implantologist.  The implantologist will usually want to remove the tooth to avoid unnecessary bone loss & mangling the gum & soft tissue.  I didn’t shop around as I decided that recommendation was paramount & I didn’t understand the process.  Good luck.

If you have a good relationship with your dentist and trust them - then trust their recommendation of where to get your implant done too.

There are many places you could go and get one done - but without a really good understanding of the process involved, it is really easy for a layman to get completely confused about what you should be looking for.

This is why having a general dentist who you see regularly and trust is a very valuable relationship.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
